This will now serve as a blog of my stay in the hospital.
So I’ve now been in the hospital for just about 9 days, and I’ve come to realize that Twittering and Facebooking isn’t really cutting the update urge. There’s so much I’ve wanted to write down thru this process, things I will want to come look at later on and question. I’m going to be as inconsistent about updating as I probably always have been, but I’m going to attempt to cut through any bullshit and be (at times) graphic and direct. It’s not meant to offend or disturb any of you, but I apologize now if anything that I’m going on about makes any of you queasy or otherwise uncomfortable. For starters, what is it that has me here so long? I have developed what is called Diverticulitis, a condition that happens when pouches (known as Diverticula) form in the wall of the colon. Doctors think this may be the result of low-fiber diets (something in which I have long engaged as a means to control weight). Whatever the cause, it is incredibly uncomfortable and, in my case, was complicated by a more threatening side-effect: an abscess.
The abscess is a collection of infection that builds up in one’s system, eventually manifesting in a knotted, tender, and quite painful bump. If you’ve ever needed a root canal, you’re likely intimately familiar with what an abscess is. If untreated or irritated, an abscess can rupture. Complications from a ruptured abscess vary anywhere from simple pain and sickness to gangrene, organ failure, and (potentially) loss of life.
Imagine what went thru my mind when I learned this was what I had after months of doctor’s visits and incorrect diagnoses.
Ok my breakfast just came, I’ll write more later..
